Toussaint L'Overture
Toussaint L'Overture was a famous black freedom fighter. He was a major leader of the slave revolts in Saint Domingue or Haiti.
Toussaint was born a slave in the 1700s. His father had been a free African who was captured and sold into slavery in Saint Dominuge (Haiti). Despite being raised as a slave, Toussaint's father taught him how to read and write. Because he was from Saint Dominuge (Haiti) Toussaint spoke French and read many popular French books. These books talked about freedom and equality for all men.
In 1789, the French Revolution happend and the new French governent granted freedom to all slaves. However, the plantation owners in Saint Dominuge (Haiti) were furious, so the government took back the slaves freedom. This angered the slaves, so Toussaint led a slave army and defeated the French troops.
By 1793, the French had abolished slavey. Toussaint was nicknamed Toussaint L'Overture or opening because he seemed to be able to find openings in the defenses of his enemies.
In 1802, he was capture by the French emperor Napoleon and sent to France. He died short after. The people of Saint Domingue declared their independence and renamed their country Haiti.
