Miguel Hidalgo
Miguel Hidalgo was known as the Father of Mexican Independence. He was a priest who led a peasant or farmer army against the Spanish
army in Mexico, which at the time was called New Spain. His army won some victories but he unfortunately did not live to see Mexican independence.
He was born in 1753 and was well educated. He read about freedom and equality but he saw that the peasants or farmers in Mexico were not treated fairly. He noticed that people from Spain were treated better than people born in Mexico.
In 1808 France invaded Spain and removed the Spanish King from power. This meant that people in Mexico were supposed to support the new French government. But many people didn’t want to support the new French government, so they decided to fight for their independence.
In 1810, Hidalgo was warned that he was going to be arrested for going against the French government. Instead of running away and saving himself he rang his church bells calling all of his followers to the church. In the church
he told his follower that it was time they fought for their independence.
At first, Hidalgo and his troops had some victories but they were not trained and were no match to the Spanish army. Eventually, Hidalgo was captured and later killed by Spanish soldiers for treason. Despite Hidalgo’s death, the war for independence continued and in 1821, 10 years later Mexico finally gained its independence.
